OFFICER SAFETY: TACTICS FOR HIGH RISK ENVIRONMENTS
(16.0 Hours)

I. Course Description
One or two-day officer safety tactics courses for armed and unarmed field probation, parole officers, plainclothes officers working in high-risk environments. An excellent course for new officers and yearly update training.

II. Course Topics Covered
Use of Force, officer safety and street survival tactics; pre-contact threat assessment, critical decision making, contact & cover, teamwork; components of arrest, body searches and search & seizure; concealable, improvised and exotic weapon familiarization to include assault weaponry; arrest, control and handcuffing tactics; building searches.

The 16.0-hour course includes additional training on officer safety, raid planning and building searches.

Courses stress significant hands-on practice and participation in realistic field scenarios.

III. Audience
Plainclothes probation, parole, police, law enforcement investigators and supervisors.

IV. Performance Objectives

  1. Articulate a legal and reasonable use of defensive force within state and constitutional guidelines.
  2. Identify the steps in the continuum of force.
  3. Demonstrate basic officer safety principals and tactics during high-risk contacts.
  4. Identify the components of high-risk contacts, available safety and force options.
  5. Employ correct critical decision-making.
  6. Be familiar with profiles and tactics of potentially violent subjects.
  7. Identify and articulate danger signs prior to contact.
  8. Develop effective searching, control and handcuffing techniques.
  9. Identify types of commonly used weapons and demonstrate techniques in weapons disarming and weapons retention
