OSI Basic Courses

I. Course Description
A chemical agents, Officer Safety and Use of Force course with emphasis on the use of oleor capsicum (OC) pepper spray aerosol devices. Course meets all POST and State Board of Corrections requirements per 12403 PC.

This course is for peace officers only.

II. Course Topics Covered
Legal aspects and guidelines of the Use of Force, Force Continuum post-incident report writing and testimony; officer safety, pre-contact threat assessment, cont & cover, components of arrest, weapon (OC) retention techniques; dynamics of chemical agents (CN, CS, OC) and hand-held aerosol weapons; physiological effects, medical information; tactical use of OC in field and institution environments; first aid/aftercare for chemical agent OC exposure and critical decision making. This course is supported by excellent videos, a manual and high-risk contact demonstrations.

A significant portion of this course involves the tactical use of OC in field and institution environments, during realistic, stress-induced role-playing scenarios, using inert (water-only) aerosol canisters.
