USE OF FORCE: UNARMED DEFENSIVE TACTICS (UDT) LEVEL I (BASIC)

I. Course Description
Instruction in the proper use of defensive force and Unarmed Defensive Tactics (UDT) for overcoming and controlling aggressive and violent physical assaults upon field and institution personnel.

This is the most popular self-defense course in the STC training program and the ONLY dynamic course offering actual low, moderate to full speed combat scenario practice against heavily padded "assailant" instructor. Over 10,000 peace officers have successfully completed this exceptional officer safety course. A MUST TAKE course for both armed and unarmed officers.

II. Course Topics Covered
Use of Force legal guidelines and Force Continuum; pre-contact threat assessment, components of contact and arrest; officer safety in field and institution environment profiles of most common assaults against officers; body mechanics and combat physiology; defenses and countermeasures against the most common unarmed standing and ground-based assaults; tactical ground fighting; weapon retention (OC canister/handgun).

This course features simple and highly effective standing and tactical ground fighting technique and has been specially designed to accommodate personnel of all ages, sizes and strength potentials.

III. Audience
General. Must be in good physical health and not have medical restrictions.

IV. Performance Objectives

  1. Identify most common patterns of unarmed assaults against officers in field and institution environments.
  2. Utilize basic concepts of threat awareness and officer safety to minimize risk during officer-subject contacts.
  3. Identify where Unarmed Defensive Tactics is found on the Defensive Force Continuum and be able to correctly respond to a variety of threats and assaultive behaviors appropriately within the continuum.
  4. Develop command presence and verbal management of conflict to deter aggression.
  5. Develop effective, controlled tactical responses under intense physical and emotional stress conditions through participation in realistic assault scenarios.
  6. Develop effective, controlled tactical responses to protect officer's defensive weapon(s) during realistic assault scenarios.
  7. Be able to properly articulate orally and in writing the use of defensive force in post-incident justification scenarios.

Tuition: Depends on travel costs
* Tuition costs per student significantly lower if agency provides an Assistant Instructor who has completed the Martinelli Assistant UDT AI Instructor course.
