I. Course Description
An 8.0-hour course in drug abuse, addiction and narcotics influence
recognition for the working field officer and investigator. This
course covers all aspects of major street narcotics recognition,
packaging, sales, influence symptoms, influence testing, report writing
and testimony. The major drugs covered will be: marijuana, heroin/opiates,
stimulants: cocaine/crack, methamphetamine and barbituates.
This course is supported by excellent handouts, contemporary videos
and narcotic display items. Course instructors are working narcotics
investigators, with significant field and covert investigations experience,
who are court-certified expert witnesses.
II. Performance Objectives
- Know the production history of major street narcotics: opiates/heroin,
cocaine/crack, methamphetamine, marijuana, hallucinogens. Be familiar with
street narcotic and drug sales terms.
- Know how street drugs are produced, packaged, sold and purchased.
Be able to recognize drug paraphernalia including clandestine lab equipment
and devices for personal use.
- Know physiological and psychological symptoms of drug influence and
addiction for major street drugs. Be able to interview, recognize and
successfully test for influence of major street drugs.
- Know the safety protocols for various hazardous materials and chemicals
used in the manufacture of illicit drugs. Know the safety protocols for
safely collecting narcotics evidence.
- Be able to write effective reports and testify in court regarding narcotics
violations.
- Be able to testify in court as to investigative expertise on the subject
of Drug Abuse Recognition (DAR).
