I. Course Description
A 2-day Supervisors' Course for probation and institutions personnel.
Course addresses a variety of diverse employment responsibilities for
supervising personnel working in field and corrections environments.
Course may also be used as an update for those supervisors who have
not received any supervisory training since taking a Basic Supervisors Course.
II. Course Topics Covered
The nature of supervision, transition from line officer to supervisor,
employee relationships, communication and negotiation with employees;
agency and supervisor liability; employee training and evaluation, internal
affairs, progressive discipline, Peace Officer Bill of Rights {AB-301},
defensive force and critical incident response, report writing; team building
and employee enhancement.
Course features practical, hands-on scenarios and role-playing involving supervisors as evaluators.
III. Audience
Probation supervisors in field and institution assignments, SPOs, DPO 2-3, CO 2-3, Sr. Group Counselors.
IV. Performance Objectives
- Understand the nature and function of supervision in a probation field or
institution work environment.
- Demonstrate the ability to train, evaluate (orally and in writing)
and supervise line staff and other employees.
- Understand and demonstrate proficiency in the dynamics of employee
communication and negotiation.
- Understand and demonstrate knowledge in agency/supervisory liability
case law, the Peace Officers Bill of Rights and concepts of progressive
discipline. Be able to conduct basic internal affairs investigations.
- Understand basic force management case law; be able to design and employ
correct tactical responses to critical incidents. Be able to write and review
use of force and critical incident reports.
- Be able to positively enhance employee performance; develop and guide work
teams. Be able to recognize employees with learning or motivation problems and
develop remediation programs.
