PROBATION TRAINING OFFICER (PTO) - "Training for Trainers"
(24.0 Hours)

I. Course Description A 24-hour course for probation field and institutional staff who are responsible for training of staff. Completion of course certifies officer to train and evaluate new, part-time and rotating staff in a variety of law enforcement, criminal justice and departmental procedures and policies.

II. Course Topics Covered
Philosophy of training, teaching technology, agency and training liability and risk management, effective communication with employees, enhancing employee performance, training remediation. Participants will develop and instruct training lesson plans, participate in mock instruction and remediation scenarios, and write employee performance notes and evaluations using a provided employee evaluation manual.

III. Performance Objectives

Articulate the philosophy, nature, and function of training in a probation field or institutional work environment.
Effectively develop positive working/training relationships with employees, develop rapport, gain employee confidence, and enhance employee performance.
Employ various instruction and training techniques in a one-to-one setting and in groups.
Identify different learning styles of staff and apply techniques to effectively train staff with all styles.
Complete thorough and detailed employee documentation notes, including both informal notes and evaluations and formal evaluations of performance utilizing proper and appropriate report writing techniques.
Develop positive training programs for employees who are experiencing performance problems or difficulties in their job assignments.
