TACTICAL NEGOTIATION AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION
(8.0 Hours)

I. Course Description
An excellent one-day course in the use of verbal and non-verbal forms of communication used to diffuse or reduce anger/aggression when dealing with difficult, non-compliant and potentially assaultive subjects. Course emphasizes important verbal techniques necessary to general voluntary compliance in field and institution settings to avoid deploying force options. Participants will also learn similar verbal techniques to enhance their relationships with difficult workers and in other social settings.

II. Course Topics Covered
Constitutional law relating to the Use of Force and verbal warnings, officer safety and pre-contact assessment; profiling your audience, verbal management of aggression and confrontation; handling verbal abuse, listening, decision making. Participants learn an easy 5-Step program for generating voluntary compliance, verbal options and will receive an introduction to safe responses during critical incidents.

Participants will be involved and evaluated in negotiating with difficult and/or verbally non- compliant persons during a variety of realistic role-playing scenarios.

  1. Be familiar with various reasons why officers are injured/ killed by assailants in field and institution environments.
  2. Identify where and how tactical negotiation is employed in the use of force continuum
  3. Use techniques of pre-contact threat assessment for subjects, associates and diverse environments.
  4. Generate voluntary compliance prior to use of force options.
  5. Articulate and demonstrate a step-by-step process to communicate with potentially hostile or non-compliant individuals in field and institutional settings.
