ARMED
PROBATION OFFICER ACADEMY

I. Course Description
A 40.0-hour Academy for Armed Probation Officers and institution/transportation
officers who are becoming armed with firearms for purposes of officer
safety and security. This is a COMPLETE introductory arming and
firearms familiarization transition course, involving all aspects
of arming, pistol craft, officer safety and the defensive tactical
use of a firearm in high-risk environments.
II. Course Topics Covered
Weapon nomenclature, disassembly and function, weapon safety and
handling, fundamental of marksmanship, weapon cleaning and care,
equipment, ammunition and ballistics, combat mindset, combat loading,
day and night combat shooting and contemporary armed officer safety
tactics. Participants will receive extensive range instruction
and practice and will participate in numerous officer safety "Shoot
/ Don't Shoot" scenarios.
III. Performance Objectives
The following are measurable performance objectives, which clearly
indicate the job-related knowledge or skill(s) that participants
will be able to demonstrate upon course completion.

Describe pistol nomenclature, assemble/disassemble
a handgun/pistol & fully clean, maintain & care for
a duty sidearm.

Demonstrate basic range & officer safety
principals & safely handle a sidearm during instruction,
range practice & involvement in training.

Demonstrate fundamentals of modern pistolcraft
& marksmanship in a variety of shooting positions &
qualify with a sidearm during course & during all "Shoot-Don't
Shoot" practicals.

Move safely & tactically while armed
within high-risk environments.

Demonstrate unarmed defensive tactics (UDT)
to retain weapon while assaulted in standing & ground-based
attacks.
Minimum/maximum class size: 16/20
