I. Course Description
A two-day officer safety and survival course for police patrol officers
responding to in-progress critical incidents, and/or officers working
solo in rural areas where police assistance is limited. This is an
excellent and popular course for all officers working field patrol assignments.
Participants will receive extensive training in a variety of officer
safety tactics and Use of Force options to enhance their personal
survival and to control/arrest violent offenders.
All techniques are simple to learn and highly effective. These techniques
specifically address and are suitable for officers of all sizes
and strength potentials.
II. Course Topics Covered
Use of Force guidelines; officer safety and survival tactics for rural and
urban police environments; pre-contact threat assessment, components
of successful contact and arrests; staging prior to contact; critical
decision making; contact and cover; Less than Lethal (LTL) force options
to include: arrest, control & restraint tactics, OC pepper spray,
introduction to Unarmed Defensive Tactics (UDT) for standing and ground-based
assaults, tactical ground fighting; LTL weaponry and munitions (sandbags,
rubber bullets and other projectiles) integral use of force; close quarter
battle (CQB) with handguns; building searches, shooting in darkness and
weapon retention (OC canister/handgun).
* A significant portion of this course involves hands-on physical
training. Participants will be involved in a variety of realistic,
stress-induced, role-playing scenarios against unarmed an armed "assailant"
instructors. Participants will use a progression of plastic projectiles,
paintball and FX (special effects) Simulation projectiles during "Shoot / Don't Shoot" scenarios.
III. Performance Objectives
- Understand and articulate state and constitutional Use of Force
guidelines and department policies relating to all levels of force
orally and in writing.
- Identify the most common patterns of armed and improvised weapons
assaults against officers. Understand basic officer safety, contact
& cover and threat assessment concepts.
- Become proficient in arrest, control, handcuffing and searching
techniques. Be able to use those techniques against passive to moderately resistive subjects.
- Become thoroughly familiar with your duty weapon. Be able to
clear malfunctions and reload in stressful situations.
- Understand and become proficient in contemporary combat shoot
techniques (Weaver and Gunsite-styles).
- Develop effective, controlled responses while under stress, through
participation in various simulated "Shoot / Don't Shoot" scenarios.
- Understand basic raid tactics. Be able to design a plan for a
building entry/search and personnel in a tactical entry operation in a safe manner.
